Life and Works of the most Venerable Jagtse Chosje Sras Rinpoche

Ven. Jangtse Chosje Sras Rinpoche is the reincarnation of Ven. Lobzang Tsultim Chosphel of Rinzong Monastery. He was born in 1928 in the Matho Palace. In the following year, 1929, he was recognised as the reincarnation of the previous Sras Rinpoche of Rizong Monastery. He was admitted to the monastery at the age of four. At the age of twelve the young Rinpoche was ordained as Samenra by the most Ven. Bakula Rinpoche. In the year 1948, he went to Tibet for higher studies. In 1950, he was admitted to Losal Ling College where he studied subjects like Pramanavartika, Prajnyaparamita and Madhyamika texts of Buddhist Philosophy. At the age of 20, the Rinpoche received the ordination of monk from 94th sitting Galdan Khripa Ven. Khrichang Lhundhup Tsondus.

In 1961, the Rinpochey obtained Geshe degreee on the occassion of Monlam Chenmo and for five years he carried out studies at Lower Tantric College. In the year 1977, he was appointed as Lama Umzad of the college by H.H. the Dalai Llama. After working as Umdzad for a year, he was appointed as the abbot of the college for three years.

In 1984, Ven. Rinzong Sras Rinpoche was appointed as abbot of Draspung Losal Ling College. During his seven years tenure as Losal Ling abbot he brought about several reforms regarding the discipline of that College. He improved the educational standard of Losal Ling College. For three years between 1992 to 1995, Rinpochey had made the retreat of Yamantaka Heruka, the tantric diety. In 1995 - 96, he was appointed by the Dalai Lama as Jangste Chosje, the record highest rank in the Gelukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and he still holds this noble position.
