Gyudzin Tantric Monastery
Volunteering

At the Gyudzin Tantric Monastary school we teach English as one of our general subjects. Currently we have resident Hindi and Tibetan teachers but our English programme relies on the volunteering efforts of people from English speaking countries. We provide full board during your stay in the monastery school and your own private room.

If you are interested in coming to teach in our school please feel free to contact us to discuss it.

Testimonial:

"I met the Vice President of the monastery during a short trip to Dharamsala in 2005. He asked me if I would be interested in teaching in a newly constructed monastery school in Ladakh for a few months. I wasn't sure at first but he left me with the words, 'it would be good for you and good for us'. On returning home I thought about it then decided it would be an interesting thing to do for a summer. I have a keen interest interest in Eastern religions and it has been a great opportunity to find out more about Tibetan Buddhism which I have been reading about for many years."

"Life in the monastery is quiet as you'd expect, the children range from the ages of five of to fifteen. The English classes are split into many groups depending on age and level. The children are respectful and dedicated to their work in class and friendly and playful outside. At first you are a curiosity but soon they begin to treat you as one of the other teachers."

"I found my three months in Phey to be very rewarding indeed. I would teach and live in the monastery during the week and every weekend I would get a bus 15km to Leh. From Leh you can make many trips in a day or so to various attractions in Ladakh of which there are many, including the highest passable road in the world about 50km away. Ladakhi people are very friendly and welcoming so don't be surprised if someone hands you a smelly baby to hold on the bus."

"Nearly all the children in the monastery have no other avenue of education, most of them coming from Zanskar. Some may become monks, some will just receive a good education and leave. If you are thinking of teaching for a few months I would just say that ultimately it is work. There is a lot of fun involved having carte blanche in terms of lessons etc. but I hope above all I managed to fulfil the task I set out for myself in the beginning which was to teach the kids something they would find valuable later on."
